Abstract
Current prosthetic vision systems and other sensory substitution devices all have low resolution and limited dynamic range that severely restrict their utility. Better imaging system could help overcome some of these limitations. We proposed methods to effectively suppress background clutter and isolate the object of interest (OI), background de-cluttering, to improve prostheses’ functionality.
Background de-cluttering may be achieved by motion parallax caused by the user’s head movement, which facilitates separation of objects at various distances. In human vision, observers can keep fixation on an OI while moving the head (gaze locking) aided by the ocular-vestibular reflex that rotates the eyes in response to head movement. However, the head-mounted camera in visual prostheses continues to be pointed straight during the head movement (translation) and does not rotate as the eyes do during similar head movements. We proposed a compensatory cropping method as a fixation aid to automatically compensate for the head movement and demonstrated the effect with the camera of visual prostheses.
Background de-cluttering also can be implemented by improving the camera and image processing. We proposed an active confocal imaging system based on light-field technology that would enable a blind user of any visual prosthesis to efficiently scan, focus on, and "see" only an OI while suppressing interference from background clutter. We developed the prototype confocal imaging system and demonstrated the background de-cluttering performance for two practical use cases (within arm length and for mobility).
