Abstract:

To deliver a fully immersive visual experience is an overwhelmingly challenging task even for today's most advanced graphics hardware. The requirements include high fidelity rendering, wide visual field of view, and high pixel density, all of which must be done with an extremely short latency. Foveated rendering dramatically cuts down rendering workload in a perceptually lossless fashion by taking advantage of the differences between foveal and peripheral vision. The fovea is an area in our retina where spatial acuity is the highest and which specializes in examining spatial details. Although visual acuity falls off monotonically in the peripheral retina as a function of eccentricity, the peripheral visual system still remains sensitive to motion and flicker. We have performed a set of psychophysical experiments seeking an efficient and effective way of doing foveated rendering. We showed that preserving contrast and temporal sensitivity significantly improves the computational savings of foveated rendering. We implemented our own foveated rendering algorithm by combining two recently developed rendering techniques (coarse pixel shading and temporal anti-aliasing). We also demonstrated that our foveated rendering algorithm outperforms contemporary foveated rendering algorithms. Audiences are welcome to try out our demo system, which will be available right after the presentation.
