Abstract

Because there are many unique structures in nature for superb functions in areas such as adhesion, optics and wetting, many scientists have been focusing on mimicking the complex structures through various fabrication methods. Among them, molding techniques with polymeric materials are most popular because they are very facile and easy to be fabricated in large area. Recently we have developed asymmetric structures inspired from nature and utilized them for several applications in adhesives, optical and microfluidic devices. We will talk about the asymmetric structures and their applications such as the Janus nanopillars for directional adhesion properties, the Lucius prism array for autostereoscopic three-dimensional displays and the hierarchical Two-Face prism arrays for a unidirectional wettings and reversible switching of the flow directions.
