After an overview of digital holography for forming images, sources of phase-error aberrations and a variety of algorithms for correcting the phase errors to produce sharp images are described. Synthesis of a giga-pixel digital hologram by aperture synthesis techniques and correcting its aberrations is also described. The emphasis will be on imaging of distant objects, but the work applies to microscopic imaging as well.

Biography

James R. Fienup received his BS in Mathematics and Physics at Holy Cross College and his PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University. He was a Senior Research Engineer at ERIM (Ann Arbor, MI) until 2002 and is the Robert E. Hopkins Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester.
