Abstract
In this talk, I will present the development of advanced laser resonator
systems, their applications to laser-micromachined active and passive
photonic device integrations, and nanophotonic device fabricationsbased on
biomimetic systems. I will focus on novel high intensity ultrafast lasers,
hybrid semiconductor fiber lasers, and one-dimensional photonic crystal
lasers made with nanostructured block-copolymers. In addition, ultrahigh
resolution imaging in vivo using ultrafast lasers will be presented as an
example for photo-medicine. In order to demonstrate these lasers and
passive devices, the theoretical models are introduced along with
confirming experimental results. Moreover, the goal of scaling down
current photonic systems can be achieved by the integration of organic and
inorganic nanostructures. Specifically, the incorporation of genetically-
engineered biological species can provide a viable scaffold for the
synthesis of nanostructures that are made of metals, semiconductors, and
dielectrics. Finally, I will discuss potential applications of these
biomimetic structures to quantum-confined nano-photonic devices such as
lasers, photovoltaic cells, and bio/chemical senso.

Seong-Ho Cho obtained B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National
University, M.S. in Physics from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently a
postdoctoral associate, working on nanoscopic photonics and lasers and
photo-biomimetics in Materials Science and Bio-engineering at the same
institute. He has worked on ultrafast lasers and optics, photo-medicine,
and photonic integrated circuits during his Ph.D. research.
