Demetri Psaltis will move to Swiss academic post

Demetri Psaltis, the Thomas G. Myers professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA) has been appointed as full professor in electrical engineering and applied optics and Dean of the School of Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Returning to his native Europe, the researcher, innovator and entrepreneur will continue his outstanding academic career and strengthen the central role of engineering at EPFL.

Psaltis is a world-renowned expert in the area of optical information processing, holography, optical networks, imaging, optical memories and optical devices, and is known for his pioneering work in holographic memory and optical neural networks. His fundamental work has had a significant impact in the scientific community, with more than a thousand citations. He served as director of the NSF Research Center on Neuromorphic Systems Engineering from 1996-1999, and currently leads the multi-institutional DARPA Center for Optofluidic Integration.

He obtained Bachelor's dgrees in economics and engineering, and Master's and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to his important contributions in fundamental and applied research, Psaltis has obtained 39 patents and co-founded two start-up companies. In his 26 years at Caltech, he made a lasting impact on several generations of students with the quality of his teaching. He has advised more than 40 PhD students, many of whom have started their own companies or gone on to successful careers in academia.

Psaltis has received many honors throughout his career, the most recent being the Dennis Gabor Award from SPIE, presented last week at the SPIE Optics & Photonics Symposium in San Diego. He is a Fellow of SPIE, the Optical Society of America, and IEEE.
