Abstract



MRI is an imaging modality that produces excellent soft tissue contrast without any ionizing radiation. Flexibility to produce images in any imaging orientation is also an important advantage. Due to such advantages, MRI has become an important clinical and research tool. In this talk, new technologies exploiting the advantages of MRI for various biomedical applications will be introduced.

Due to its non-invasive nature combined with its relatively high resolution imaging capabilities, functional MRI (fMRI) has rapidly become a dominant tool for functional neuroimaging. However, the remaining challenges in fMRI include obtaining higher resolution to better localize neural activities, imaging near high off-resonance regions such as sinus areas and the auditory cannels. Here, we introduce a new steady-state imaging method that is compatible with high spatio-temporal acquisition methods while providing distortion-free images in high off-resonance areas of the brain. These capabilities will allow neuroscientists to explore previously inaccessible parts of the brain in high resolution.

Cancer imaging using MRI also has an important place in clinical diagnosis as well as in cancer research. To discriminate cancer with normal soft tissue, contrast agents are often injected. Due to angiogenesis around cancerous tissue, contrast is more rapidly taken up by the cancer tissue than the normal tissue. Major challenges in such detection methods include imaging speed and off-resonance effects. For applications such as breast cancer imaging, fat suppression also becomes a significant challenge. Three dimensional spiral imaging combined with bilateral spectral-spatial pulses were used to address the problem of breast cancer imaging.

Contrast agent development using high magnetic moment nano-particles, interventional MRI and rapid imaging techniques are also important topics in MRI research. These issues will also be addressed in this talk.
