Abstract
Recent experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of massive wavelength division multiplexing using dispersion-managed solitons. These experiments have also shown that a highly precise control of the dispersion evolution along the fiber link was essential for providing the best system performance. A new nondestructive method for measuring the spatial distribution of chromatic dispersion along an optical fiber is presented. It is based on using Brillouin optical time-domain analysis to probe the power distribution of the four-wave mixing generated by two continuous-wave lasers. The results obtained prove that this new method is capable of providing better performance than comparable techniques. In particular dispersion fluctuations over a length scale smaller than 30m can be observed.

Luc Thvenaz received the M.Sc. degree in astrophysics from the Observatory of Geneva, Switzerland, in 1982 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland,in 1988. He developed at this moment his field of expertise, i.e. fibre optics. In 1988 he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) where he currently leads a research group involved in photonics, namely fibre optics and optical sensing. Research topics include electrical current fibre sensors, Brillouin-scattering fibre sensors, fibre nonlinearities measurement techniques and laser diode spectroscopy of gases. In 1991, he visited the PUC University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and stayed at Stanford University, USA, where he participated in the development of a Brillouin laser gyroscope. In 1998 and 1999 he stayed at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejon, South Korea, where he worked on fibre laser current sensors. In 2000 he co-founded the spin-off company Omnisens that is developing and commercializing advanced photonic instrumentation. He is author or co-author of 120 publications and 5 patents.
