Fellow of Optical Society of America
Interactions of femtosecond laser pulses with a wide variety of materials have recently been investigated. When femtosecond laser pulses are focused inside the bulk of transparent materials, the intensity in the focal volume becomes high enough to produce permanent structural modifications. The modifications have potential uses in materials processing and micromachining. Although the physical mechanisms of the modifications are still under investigations, this technique has been applied to fabricate three-dimensional photonic structures such as optical data dots, waveguides, gratings, and couplers inside a wide variety of transparent materials including glasses, crystals, and plastics. In this paper, we present the fabrication of optical elements in glasses with femtosecond laser pulses. 3-D directional couplers, Bragg gratings, and phase-type Fresnel zone plates are fabricated by use of filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses in silica glass. We will also show the fabrication experiments and morphology of micro-holes fabricated from the rear surface of silica glass, which is contact with water.
