Abstract:

Man-made structures such as photonic crystals and metamaterials can have complex band dispersions in the momentum space. We will show that some geometric and topological properties in the momentum space of some carefully design periodic artificial structures can lead to interesting phenomena. In fact, many modern notions and novel phenomena that were usually considered and discussed as quantum phenomena can be realized in photonic and acoustic metamaterial systems. I will use a few examples to illustrate the ideas. We will show that geometric phases, synthetic gauge flux and topological Weyl points can be realized in electromagnetic and acoustic meta-crystals. We will also see that pseudospin physics, most commonly known in graphene, can also be manifested in classical wave systems. We can construct photonic crystals with pseudospin of 1 (instead of pseudospin of 1/2 as in graphene) which carries some rather intriguing properties. We will see that the topological characteristics and the pseudospin can each lead to unique transport properties.
