Abstract

In the future, every home and computer in the world will be linked together with wide bandwidth optical fiber, enabling the transmission of large volumes of data and video. With the explosion of Internet services and with government, businesses, and individuals increasingly relying on information networks, we are faced with great risks in information exchange, which can have significant impact on both national economies and defense.

In this tutorial, we discuss the use of optics/photonics information systems and optical pattern recognition in developing new and reliable compact systems for encryption, verification, anti-counterfeiting, and securing data with diverse applications to ID card security, data encryption, biometrics verification, information web sites, and large volume optical storage.

Optical information systems present a great potential for encryption and security applications for a number of reasons:

1) Unlike electronic encryption systems that process binary data serially, optical information systems can process in parallel complex optical amplitude and phase information. Recently developed algorithms allow high-speed parallel encryption and decryption of multi-level gray scale data or complex amplitude and phase optical data.

2) Because of the short wavelength of light, small information features can be recorded in optical amplitude, phase, and wavelength. This allows large volumes of secured data, on the order of a million pixels per few square millimeters, to be encoded and processed, thereby substantially increasing the number of mathematical possibilities required to break a code.

3) Optical systems offer many degrees of freedom to generate multi-dimensional encryption keys to secure information--including wavelength multiplexing, temporal dynamics, spatial encoding, angular frequency encoding, and polarization encoding (for storage)--which can greatly increase the mathematical uncertainty involved in breaking the security system.

4) Optical information encoding is compatible with optical communication networks with extremely high bandwidth to hide the secured data. Algorithms, systems, and experimental results will be discussed.

We shall review optical information processing systems and their application to security and anti-counterfeiting systems.
