Abstract

An index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has a solid core surrounded by a holey cladding region. A typical index-guiding PCF is fabricated by stacking silica capillaries periodically in a hexagonal close packed array and replacing the central capillary with a solid silica rod of the same outer dimension. Index-guiding photonic crystal fibers with appropriate structural parameters support the fundamental and second order modes over a practically infinite wavelength range. The polarization principal axes and mode field patterns of the modes can be made stable by having different size air-holes along the orthogonal directions.

In this seminar, a general reviews about FBGs, PCFs and their fibre sensor applications will be given. Especially the potential applications of two-mode PCFs and other types of PCFs are discussed extensively.



강사이력

Wei Jin received his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Beijing University. He received his PH.D degree in fibre optics from Strathclyde University in 1991 and was employed as a Research Fellow at the same University till the end of 1995. He jointed the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an assistant professor in January 1996 and became an associate professor in February 1998. His research interests include fibre optic strain and temperature sensors, fibre grating devices and applications, fibre optic gyroscopes and guided wave optical circuit analysis. He is a senior member of IEEE, a member of OSA and SPIE. He served as a program committee member of a number of international conferences on optical fibre sensors and has been a reviewer of several internationally learned journals such as IEEE JLT, Applied Optics and Optics Letters.
