Abstract
The expansion of the telecommunications field has coincided with a recent heightened recognition of the benefit of light-based tools for biomedical applications. The opportunity to utilize the tremendous advances in fiber optics, lasers and advanced optical devices for basic and applied biology is therefore at hand. In this seminar, I will talk about how my research evolved from telecom photonics to biomedical imaging, and how the optical expertise and serendipity led to an invention of optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI): a new high-resolution, high-speed optical diagnostic tool. Other fiber-based advanced microscopy technologies on the horizon will be presented, including confocal microscopy and miniature 3-dimensional endoscopy.
