Abstract

An estimated 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired and 39 million people are blind (WHO, 2013). There are encouraging advances in visual aids and prostheses for blind and visually impaired. This seminar covers the multiplexing prism for field expansion of visually impaired person and the active confocal imaging for visual prostheses of blind.

A number of implantable prosthetic vision systems for blind have been developed. Retinal implants, such as the Argus II and Alpha IMS recently received FDA approval in the US and the CE mark in Europe, respectively. Various sensory substitution devices such as the tactile graphic display, tongue stimulator, and auditory vision substitution provide less invasive options. However, they all have low resolution, limited visual field, and can display only few gray levels, severely restricting their utility. To overcome these limitations, image processing or the imaging system could emphasize objects of interest and suppress the background clutter. An active confocal imaging system based on light-field technology that will enable a blind user of any visual prosthesis to efficiently scan, focus on, and “see” only an object of interest while suppressing interference from background clutter is proposed.

Patients with acquired monocular vision are missing the temporal crescent on the affected side, while patients with bitemporal hemianopia due to lesions at the optic chiasm are missing the crescents on both sides. Previous visual field expansion devices required scanning into the device and created a blind area of equal magnitude to the shifted view. A multiplexing prism can expand the visual field in both cases avoiding these limitations. The MxP prevents apical scotomas by superimposing both see-through and shifted views. The multiplexing prism glasses for field expansion of AMV and BH are proposed.
