Career
- Byoungho Lee received B.S. and M.S. degrees in 1987 and 1989, respectively, from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in Electronics Engineering.
At graduation in 1987, he received the Award by the Minister of Education of Korea because his undergraduate GPA was the highest in the College of Engineering of the University.
He was awarded the Korean Government Fellowship for Studying Abroad and Wheeler Fellowship of the University of California at Berkeley.
He received a Ph.D. degree in 1993 from the UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.
In 1994 he joined the faculty of the School of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University, where he became a full professor in 2005.
He became a Fellow of SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering) in 2002 and a Fellow of OSA (The Optical Society of America) in 2005.
He has served as a Director-at-Large of OSA and a member of the Award Committee of Board of Directors of OSA, and is currently serving as a member in the Strategic Planning Committee of OSA.
He also served as a member of the Engineering, Science and Technology Policy Committee of SPIE.
He has served as an oversea editor for Japanese Journal of Applied Physics and an associate editor for Optical Fiber Technology, and is now serving as a topical editor
for Applied Optics and an associate editor of the Journal of the Society for Information Display, and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Optical Society of Korea.
He was the conference Co-Chair of the 'Holography, Diffractive Optics, and Applications II' (part of Photonics Asia) held in Beijing,
China, in November of 2004 and the Chair/Co-Chair of the OSA Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and Three-Dimensional Imaging for 2007-2009.
He has been very actively involved in various domestic academic organization activities as well.
He received the '98 Hae-Dong Paper Award of IEEK, the Award of KIEE in 1999, the 2000 Paper Award of OSK, the 2001 Paper Award of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies,
the first Sinyang Academic Award of the Engineering Faculty of Seoul National University, and the 2006 Academic Award of OSK.
In 1999, his laboratory was honored as one of the first National Research Laboratories by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea.
In 2002 he received the 5th Young Scientist Award from the President of Korea. He received the Scientist of the Month Award of Korea in September 2009.
He also received several times the Outstanding Research Faculty Award and Outstanding Teaching Faculty Award of the College of Engineering, Seoul National University.
He gave more than 80 invited talks at international conferences over the world.
His current research interests are surface plasmon polaritons, diffractive optics, digital holography and three-dimensional display.
