Abstract

Light absorption is a fundamental optical phenomenon that the energy of electromagnetic waves impinging on a certain object is converted to other useful forms of energy such as heat, electron-hole pairs, phonon generation, chemical potential, and molecular deformation. Recent studies have revealed that deep-subwavelength metallic scatters and antenna arrays can be used for significant enhancement in light absorption with on-demand manipulation of light polarization and wavelength, and these are referred to as metafilm absorbers. As a next step, there has been growing interest in developing actively tunable metafilm absorbers. In this seminar, we present an electrically tunable metafilm absorbers by using transparent conducting oxides (TCOs). First, the fundamental electro-optical properties of TCOs such as relationship between the carrier concentration and the dielectric constant of TCO, a change of carrier concentration distribution in TCO upon electric gating are introduced. Next, we deal with the working principle of the metafilm absorber composed of an ultrathin TCO film sandwiched by subwavelength metallic structures. Finally, perspective of tunable metafilm absorbers based on TCOs is discussed.
