Terahertz and Optics Plasmonics (TOPS)

Nov. 8-9, 2007
Centennial Memorial SAMSUNG Hall, Korea University

Workshop Co-Chairs :   Q-Han Park, Korea University
                       DaiSik Kim, Seoul National University

1. Workshop Synopsis

Surface plasmon waves, due to their 2-D confinement nature, can overcome the traditional diffraction limit, and become a key-component in nano opto-electronics, nano-lithography, sub-wavelength imaging. Demands for ever-faster electronic devices and their characterizations recently brought intense research efforts to explore an under-utilized frequency region, the so-called terahertz gap, using a variety of techniques including both the traditional microwave technique and also the new fast pulse time domain approaches to generate, detect and image terahertz fields. In the meantime, the traditional concept of surface plasmons, existent in lossy metals does not apply to the terahertz region and lower frequencies, because metals appear almost ‘perfect’. However, recently the concept of surface plasmons has been extended to metals with grooves and holes, which makes them ‘imperfect’.

The purpose of this workshop will be to bring together experts in Spain, Germany, Netherlands, the U.S., and Korea to review their current state-of-the-art research and future prospects in plasmonics and terahertz research, plasmonic phenomena in terahertz frequency region, and to explore possibilities of joining forces and collaborative researches in this emerging technical area.

Contributions for this workshop are solicited in the following areas:
- Modeling of plasmonics and plasmonic devices
- Active plasmonics
- Terahertz transmission phenomena
- Near-field optics
- Nanophotonics
