Abstract
   The activities of research and development of 3D imaging technologies in Taiwan and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) were introduced. It started from 90' with only a few organizations and to the current hot topics in the industry and academic area. However, the market demand is still waiting for the emerging of mature, good and cheap 3D image solutions. And this is the target for the newly formed 3D Interaction and Display Alliance (3DIDA).

   Rung-Ywan Tasi got his MS and Ph.D degrees in Materials Science & Engineering from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan in 1985 and 1989, respectively. In 1989 he joined Materials Research Laboratories/ Industrial Technology Research Institute (MRL/ITRI) as a researcher, focusing on opto-electronic thin films preparation. He left MRL/ITRI and went to Cambridge University in England as a visiting scholar in 1990. In 1991 he came back to Taiwan as an engineer in Opto-Electronics Systems Laboratories (OES/ITRI). He was promoted up to the Vice-Director of  Division of Optical System in 2000. Then he led a team to form a new company of Walsin THz Technology as a co-founder. The company was working on the manufacturing of DWDM filters and optical thin film devices. In 2003, he was invited back to EOL/ITRI as a Director of the Division of Optical System of EOL/ITRI.

   Currently, he is a leader in the field of image optics system, especially on the development of projection and 3D imaging technologies. He has been the General Secretariat of The Optical Engineering Society of Republic of China (ROCOES) since June of 2003 and 3D Interaction and Display Alliance(3DIDA) since October of 2007. He is presently one of the board members of Taiwan Optics/Optronics Manufacturers' Association (TOOMA), which was formed by the locally optical companies. He is also one of the members of Steering Committee of 6th International Conference on Optics-photonics Design & Fabrication (ODF'08, Taipei), which will be held in Taipei in June 9~11, 2008. He has been the author or co-author of over 30 technical papers and has more than 10 awarded or pending patents.
