OSA 최초로 여성으로서 회장이 되었던 Dr. Jean M. Bennett 이 최근 작고하여, OSA의 현 회장, 전임 회장 등등이 이 분을 추모하는 글들을 돌리고 이는 OSA 홈페이지에도 올라 있다.

나는 개인적으로 이 분을 모르기때문에 별다른 느낌은 없지만, Optics Express의 편집위원장의 글을 보면 대단한 분이었다는 생각이 든다.

2004년부터 Optics Express의 편집위원이었는데, 자원했던 모양이다. 자원한 이유는...
"... I have been writing and reviewing optics papers for over 50 years and know a lot about the basic subject of surface roughness and scattering. I have seen numerous papers on this subject that are in the published literature that are wrong, either because the reviewers were not knowledgeable or careful or an editor passed a paper that should have been rejected. I don't want to add to the junk in the literature."

이 분이 OSA 회장이었던 해가 1986년이니, 회장을 하고 거의 20년 지나서, 논문지에 틀린 논문들이 실리는 것을 못 참고 자원하여 편집위원(편집위원장도 아니고)이 된 것이다.

학회 회장을 하여 명예를 얻는 것을 인생의 목표처럼 살아가는 사람들은, 또는 그걸 바탕으로 더 큰 자리로 나가길 바라는 사람들은, 상상도 할 수 없는 일이다.
