Abstract
Fundamental and detailed aspects of high-power fibre lasers and their recent dramatic advances are discussed with particular attention to kilowatt fibre sources in a multitude of regimes (from cw to fs). Their prospects for further power-scaling perhaps up to megawatt and the related, immediate and potential applications are also discussed.

Dr. Yoonchan Jeong joined the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton as a Research Fellow in 2001 and was promoted to a Senior Research Fellow in 2003. He obtained his B. Sc., M. Sc., and Ph. D. degrees in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respectively and held two years’ postdoctoral fellowship at the same university. His early research covered theory of waveguide/optical fibres, quantum theory of light, physics and applications of grating-structured nonlinear/linear media, all-optical processing and switching, volume homographic memory systems, three-dimensional displays. Following the initial wide experience with fundamentals in optics, his research interests have moved to ultra-high-power optical fibre laser/amplifier systems. Since he joined the ORC, he has focused on silica-based, cladding-pumped fibre lasers doped with rare-earth elements such as ytterbium, erbium, and thulium for operation at wavelengths around 1.06, 1.5 and 2 μm respectively. His research has included innovative designs for new fibres, as well as fibre laser and amplifier configurations. This has involved extensive research at the boundaries of laser physics and materials science. His work has led to over hundred publications, including patents, a book contribution, and journal and conference papers, with several invited and post-deadline papers at leading international conferences. He is currently a technical committee member of the Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications (OAA, Fiber and Active Waveguides) conference. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of America (OSA).
