Abstract

Metallic structures on the nanometer scale can lead to improved optical properties. With rapid development of fabrication techniques, it is possible to control the structure of metals and thereby to obtain enhanced characteristics of surface plasmons. In this talk, I will review optical biosensing techniques based on an exciation of surface plasmons. Especially, plasmonic biosensing substrates with subwavelength nanostructures which can enhance the sensing performance will be discussed. Practical applications of plasmonic structures to detection of cell responses and biochemical interactions will be also presented.
