Abstract
This lecture overviews systematically the research progress in optical fiber sensors (OFS) at University of Electronic Science & Technology of China (UESTC), in recent years, including Fiber-Optic Fabry-Perot Interferometric Sensors (FFPI), Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGs), and Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensors based on Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA). With the strong support of research grants of >5 million USD from the Chinese government and industry, significant advances has been achieved and a number of novel fiber-optic sensors were invented, such as 800℃ high-temperature OFS for strain measurement based on micro FFPI fabricated by laser-micromachining, the smallest high-temperature pressure OFS formed at the fiber tip, the 300km FBG and 122km BOTDA systems for temperature/strainmeasurement, which are all new world records in the field of OFS.
Biography
Prof. Yun-Jiang Rao was a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow from 1992 to 1999 at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. From 1999 to 2004, he was the Chang-Jiang Chair Professor in Optical Engineering and Head of the Optical Fiber Technology Group at Chongqing University, China. Since 2005, he has been the Dean of School of Communication and Information Engineering, and Director of the Key Lab of Optical Fiber Sensing & Communications (Minstry of Education, China), University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, as well as Chang-Jiang Chair Professor in Optical Engineering. Due to his outstanding contributions to Fiber Optics, he won the “Wang-Da-Heng Optics Award” of the Optical Society of China in 2001 and the National Achievement Award for Returned Overseas Scientists in China in 2003.
He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences as well as several book chapters and two books (in Chinese). Prof. Rao is a senior member of OSA and SPIE. He serves as a TPC member of International Conferences on Optical Fiber Sensors (OFS) and the TPC Co-Chair of OFS-22. He is the founder of Asia-Pecific Optical Sensors Conferences (APOS). He is an Associate Editor of IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Springer journal-----Photonic Sensors.
