In Memoriam: R. Clark Jones

Jones, winner of the 2004 G.G. Stokes Award, died in April.



R.Clark Jones, the 2004 G.G. Stokes Award winner for lifetime achievement in optical polarization, passed away on 26 April before he could receive his award.



Jones was born in Toledo, OH, on 30 June 1916. In 1934, he was one of the first six high school seniors to receive the then-new Harvard College National Prize Fellowships. He earned a BA summa cum laude in 1938 and a PhD in 1941, both from Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). He was employed by Bell Telephone Laboratories in the New York City area from 1941 to 1944, and then worked at Polaroid in Cambridge, MA, until his retirement in 1982.



The G.G. Stokes Award is given for exceptional contribution to the field of polarization. With his development of Jones calculus, he did just that.



In an important series of papers published between 1941 and 1956, Jones introduced and developed Jones calculus. This mathematical method for dealing with and understanding polarized light is required learning for all students of polarization and many new students of optics. It continues to be an important tool for scientists who work with polarization in a wide variety of fields.



He also received the Dennis Gabor Award in 1989 from SPIE, as well as the Adolph Lomb Medal in 1944 and the Frederic Ives Medal in 1972, both from the Optical Society of America (OSA; Washington, D.C.). The Frederic Ives Medal is OSA's highest award for overall distinction in optics. In addition, he was awarded a Fellowship in the Society for Imaging Science and Technology in 1960.



Jones took particular satisfaction that eight of his publications were selected for the benchmark book Polarized Light (1975, Halsted Press) and six publications were selected for the benchmark book Infrared Detectors, also published in 1975.
