Abstract
  Thin films of birefringent optical materials can be employed to improve the viewing angle characteristics, including contrast ratio and gray scale stability, of conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The author will discuss the principles of phase retardation compensation for the improvement of viewing angle characteristics of LCDs. Starting from the negative C-plates, the author will discuss phase retardation compensation by using a compensation of various birefringent phase retardation thin films, including negative uniaxial, positive uniaxial and biaxial films of various orientations.
