Abstract

The moiré effect is a result of an interaction between transparent layers of repeated structure, when they are observed through each other.The moiré patterns could look bright, vivid, and even unpredictable theyreflect the characteristics of gratings and observer(including locations), but not the information displayed in the screen.

In displays, the moiré effect creates an unwanted image (visual noise) which reduces the image quality.This makes the reduction (elimination) of the moiré patterns an important point of quality improvement in visual displays, especially in 3D displays. On the other hand, it appears to be possible to turn the moiré effect intosomething useful and showarbitrary images by arranging the moiré patterns. These two sides of the moiré effect (minimization and maximization) are covered in the presentation.

Biography

Vladimir V. Saveljev is a research scientist at the Imaging Media Research Center, KIST, Korea. Previously, he was with Institute of Automation and Electrometry, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, Russiauntil 2000 and with the Hanyang University, Korea until 2010. The topics of his research interest are the autostereoscopic multiview/integral imaging (3D displays, projective model, image quality, and reference functions)and the moiré effect (minimization and displays). He is author and coauthor of more than 100 publications including book chapters.
