Dr. Yeh is responsible for many fundamental contributions in the field of optics and applications. These include the development of theory of nonlinear optical wave mixing and phase conjugation in photorefractive media, the development of matrix method for analyzing wave propagation in periodic media and photonic bandgap crystals. In the area of applications, Dr. Yeh is responsible for the invention and innovation of blue-green spectral filters for strategic laser communications, optical gyros for inertial navigation, photorefractive holograms for optical storage and interconnection, interferometers for information processing, and thin film compensators for LCD viewing improvement. His current research interests include nonlinear optics, wave mixing in nonlinear media, optical phase conjugation, holographic optical storage, information processing, photonic bandgap structures, optical communication components and modules, and phase compensators for LCDs.



Dr. Yeh is Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Photonics Society of Chinese-Americans (PSC). Dr. Yeh received the 1985 Leonardo da Vinci Award (Engineer of the Year at Rockwell International Corporation). In addition, he and his co-workers received the 1989 Rudolf Kingslake Medal and Prize. Dr. Yeh is also an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering in National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan.



Dr. Yeh is the author and coauthor of over 400 technical papers, 31 US Patents. He is also the author and co-author of the following textbooks in Optics:

"Optical Waves in Crystals," (Wiley, 1984) - coauthor: Prof. Yariv of Caltech.

"Optical Waves in Layered Media," (Wiley, 1988)

"Introduction to Photorefractive Nonlinear Optics," (Wiley, 1993)

"Optics of Liquid Crystal Displays,” (Wiley, 1999) - coauthor: Prof. Gu of UCSC
