The Optical Switching and Communications Systems group at UC Davis invites applications for Research Scientists specializing in Advanced Communications Systems development. Multiple positions cover the following areas:

· High-Speed RF-Photonic Modulators: We are looking for a research scientist who is skilled in designing and testing high-speed optical modulators. The modulators will be using InGaAsP/InP waveguides with traveling wave electrodes. Digital and analog modulations up to 40 GHz will be pursued in the current project, while higher speeds may be pursued in future efforts. The candidate must be knowledgeable and skilled in the RF area. Ph.D. is required. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Micro/Nanophotonic Device Fabrication and Integration We are looking for a research scientist who is skilled in micro photonic device fabrication and integration, preferably with exposure to nano fabrication. The research scientist will conduct extensive fabrication and integration of micro- and nano- photonic components such as photonic crystals, quantum dots, nano wires, arrayed-waveguide-gratings, mode locked lasers, wavelength converters, and photonic switches. Minimum of B.S. is required. M.S. or Ph.D. is desired but not required. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Advanced Electronics and Router Systems: We are looking for a research scientist who is skilled in high-speed electronic systems and programmable electronic router design. Using FPGAs and Network Processors, the research scientist will prototype and program next generation routers. Masters degree with industry experience, or Ph.D. is desired but not required. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Intelligent Router Systems: We are looking for a research scientist (or a graduate student) who is interested/skilled in designing and developing an intelligent router. We plan to apply cognitive intelligence in the router controller to realize highly adaptive networking. One aspect of this project requires modeling and simulations of cognitive intelligence. Another requires FPGA and network processor-based router design and prototyping. New graduate student candidates or post-doctoral candidates are welcome to apply. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Nanophotonics/Microphotonics Design We are looking for a research scientist who is skilled in nano/micro photonic device design. The research scientist will conduct extensive theoretical analysis and design of nano/micro photonic components such as photonic crystal, quantum dot, nano wire, waveguides, lasers, wavelength converters, and photonic switches. Ph.D. is required. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Multi-Channel Optoelectronic Packaging We are looking for a research scientist who are skilled in fabrication and packaging of multi-channel optoelectronic devices. These devices typically require fiber alignment of multiple fibers (in an array), and high-speed (10 Gb/s and above) modulation of multiple electrical channels. We are interested in a Ph.D. level candidate skilled in RF-design, fabrication, and packaging of the high-speed multi-channel devices, or a MS or BS level candidate with fabrication and packaging capabilities. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· High-Speed Optoelectronic Communciations Systems: We are looking for a research scientist (or a graduate student) who is interested/skilled in conducting systems integration of optical routers and networking experiments in optical network testbeds. New graduate student candidates or post-doctoral candidates are welcome to apply. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

· Ultrafast Semiconductor Laser Design and Testing: We are looking for a research scientist who is skilled in semiconductor modelocked laser design and testing. The research scientist will conduct extensive design and testing of ultrafast semiconductor mode-locked lasers. Ph.D. is required. The candidate must command clear written and verbal communication skills, and must be willing to work in a team project environment.

Summaries of team projects are available on the web: http://sierra.ece.ucdavis.edu Interested candidates should send their resumes to yoo@ece.ucdavis.edu and schedule an interview. If available during June 30-July 7, please contact Prof. Yoo in Seoul, 011-9659-4353 (mobile phone number).
