Abstract:

The Dolby® PRM-4200 Professional Reference Monitor is introduced in this presentation. New applications and the consumer environment of the industry demand different capabilities for monitors used in mastering. In the cinema industry, 12-bit log signals are coming into use, with their attendant increase in dynamic range, and new digital cameras exceeding the large dynamic range of film. Hence the common 10-bit workflows are not sufficient for these applications. And there are many standards such as Rec709 and SMPTE d-cinema that specify the display of images. All displays have digital processing paths so we need the modeling of the standardized display. The reference monitor should be designed to precisely follow the image display standards in our industry and no artifacts should be introduced by the display.

PRM-4200 has the features that can fully replicate the consumer experience. It provides exceptional dark detail, precise color accuracy in all formats, extremely wide dynamic range, and high contrast ratio. Especially the 1D and 3D LUT color management allow you to emulate film stocks, d-cinema projectors, jumbotrons, or consumer displays. And the provided high brightness can emulate the consumer displays. It is also important to point out that PRM-4200 is a true P3 monitor. The technical aspects of the monitor and how we get there will be explained detail in the presentation.

Biography:

Dave Schnuelle represents Dolby Laboratories as Senior Director, Image Technology, and is responsible for guidance in Dolby’s efforts in the television, cinema and consumer imaging areas. Dave previously held Chief Engineer positions at various post-production facilities such as Editel and Modern Videofilm in Los Angeles.

Working with Lucasfilm’s THX Division beginning in 1991, Dave founded the THX Digital Mastering Program for quality assurance of home video masters and duplicated software. As Director of Technology for THX, he directed research efforts into new technology for cinemas. During that period he directly supervised the international digital cinema exhibition of the new Star Wars movies Episode 1 (1999) and Episode 2 (2002).

As Dolby’s technical program manager for the company’s Chicken Little 3D deployment for the Walt Disney studio, he saw the inadequacies of silver screens for 3D presentations, and brought the spectrum splitting concept of the Dolby 3D System to the company, for which Dolby won the Lumiere Award from the International 3D Society. He is working now on the company’s high dynamic range concepts, and the new Dolby professional television monitor.

Dave is an active member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and is the Chairman of the SMPTE 20F Film Technology Committee. He also represents the United States as a member of ISO’s Technology Committee 36, which manages the international standardization of d-cinema technology.
